The significance of the quote is that the narrator's pride shows both sides; life and death. Throughout the whole novel, the pride that the narrator is talking about is his own. The only reason that he wanted to teach his brother to walk, run, and play, was so that he could have a "normal" brother. So in this aspect, his pride caused a new "life" for his brother, which consequently ended up in death.
