How do you change Laptop Fan Settings??

Hi have an Acer Aspire 5315 and my friend has an Advent 8109. Both of us have problems with overheating tho hers is much worse. I remember once having a laptop that allowed me to change the settings for the fan...is this the case on all laptops? Or at least ours?! Thnaks
