How to write a description?

When you are writing a novel and you need to describe what a character looks like, how do you do this without being too straightforward and just launching into a description. I also read somewhere that it's not good to have a character look at their reflection and use that to describe them. So what are some effective ways to tell the reader how a character looks without being obvious?
